Born To Be American Idol
I’ve seen a spoiler list for the song choices on American Idol tonight, “Music from the Movies,” and I have to say I hope it’s right, cause mostly the songs all look great. One exception is for Lil’s choice. That one makes me think she wants to leave. But we can talk about it once we see if the list I have is right.
I’m not a fan of Quentin Tarantino, I don’t believe I’ve ever watched one of his movies, at least not intentionally, and I don’t think he makes a great mentor or judge for a singing competition. But I’m guessing that’s not why they have him on the show.
I just noticed, no judge’s entrance! Did they not do that last week either and I just missed it? Well, maybe American Idol can be taught new things. I like it when they read what people say and actually listen.
So we start out this week with Allison Iraheta singing Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Aerosmith. Being in the first spot clearly means that they like Allison and want her to hang around for a while. I hope. This was not her best performance, but the girl has something I like. She is true to herself and that is important in this competition. I’m afraid she’s gonna be the shocker elimination, but maybe there won’t be such a thing this year, with the the judges’ save and all. Maybe.
Anoop Desai is in the “forget me” spot singing Everything I Do, Bryan Adams. I sang this song for a wedding once and there’s a funny story attached to that, but I won’t bother you with it now. Remind me later. It worries me that Anoop is second, cause this is traditionally a very unsafe spot on Idol, although that hasn’t proven true for this year. Either way, he sounds amazing tonight, more like the Anoop we came to know and love back in the early rounds. He has to make it though this week or the world will be all askew. Laura has just declared this as her favorite Anoop performance and I have to agree with her.
Next up is the fabulous Adam Lambert with Born to be Wild, Steppenwolf. First of all, I want to say that if Constantine Maroulis had never pulled off his amazing version of Bohemian Rhapsody on American Idol in Season 4, we would not have this kind of performance today. I believe that. Because Constantine choice to do something so atypical to the Idol stage, and because he nailed it, it opened the door for others to make better song choices. I can only be thankful that he did, though, cause now we have Adam Lambert and, honestly, I’m not even sure what to say about that performance. The words amazing, unbelievable, incredible, and fantabulous come to mind. It was all energy, sound and lights. I loved it. Especially the way he worked the stage and became part of the band instead of just someone out on stage singing. The lighting alone proves that Adam is the Chosen One.
Matt Giraud is next with To Really Love a Woman, Bryan Adams. I want to like Matt, but somehow he just doesn’t quite hit the right notes for me. (Pun completely intentional.) I know that people do love that kind of thing, I’m just not one of them. Laura says she liked it, but it wasn’t her favorite of his. Mine either. Matt might need to worry this week cause he’s in the middle of the pack and he might not be so memorable. Or maybe he will be remembered but in a bad way.
We have just decided that we don’t like not hearing Simon’s critique of each contestant. He should be able to talk!
Danny Gokey is singing Endless Love, Diana Ross. I’m not sure this is a good choice for him, but we’ll see. What’s the deal with his lack of glasses? Did he get contacts? In the beginning, it already sounds like Danny’s messing with the melody a little and not necessarily in a good way. By the end of the song, Danny got to where he needed to be. Not his best performance, but it was still solid. Danny is a lot like Adam or Allison, in that you either like them or you don’t. I think Danny’s perfectly safe and that he’s still headed for the Top 3.
Kris Allen sings Falling Slowly, Glen Hansard (of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova. It’s nice to see him just sing, without hiding behind an instrument. I don’t know this song and, honestly, I think it’s a little boring and kinda sing-songy. His voice is OK, but I’m sorta done with Kris. He’ll probably be safe this week, but I’m not sure he’ll make the Top 5.
Lil Rounds, as per the spoiler list I saw, is singing The Rose, Bette Midler. So she’s clearly still spinning the divas. If she makes it another week, I’ll bet she sings something by Cher or Mariah. Clearly, she either doesn’t understand the judges’ advice or she doesn’t care. She should care. They have her in the pimp spot, so it’s clear that they want her to stick around for a while, but I think AI should just give up on her. She didn’t belt the song out like Bette, and Lil might think she was putting her R&B spin on it, but in reality, she was sucking all the life out of it and leaving it limp and flat. While Lil might not have been as awful this week as she has been, but she still wasn’t great. Then she talked back to Simon, which I hate.
My bottom three are Lil, Matt and Kris. Vote for the Worst is backing Lil this week, and that might save her, although so far this season, they haven’t been very successful. If I’m guessing, I’d say that Matt is probably going home this week.

Whoa…it’s like you’re in my head or something. Well except for Lil. I actually liked it. And for once, I think Simon deserved more talking back than he got.
