Cavemenace

OMG!!! Did anyone else sit through ABC’s Cavemen Tuesday night? It was so bad. I mean, really, really, really bad. I can’t say that there was anything about it that I liked. Well, wait a minute, the show is set in San Diego, CA, one of my favorite places on earth and there was one scene that I liked. It was in the furniture store and Joel is telling his trainee about his love life problems. The trainee says: “It’s not like there’s a restraining order or anything.” Joel: “No” Trainee: “Yeah, me either” as he shifts his eyes away. It was perfect. But other than that one brief moment, I wanted to claw my eyes out and run, screaming (or at least change the channel), cause it was that awful. Plus, you know, I’m never getting that time back.
Then I was thinking, this is the pilot that they re-wrote and re-shot. How bad was the first one? Why didn’t they take that as a sign and just move on from this bad, bad idea?
I can’t even find words to express how truly awful I thought it was. I don’t even like to keep thinking about it, it was that bad. The point of the episode was that Joel has new girlfriend, Kate, who is a “sap” (for Homo sapien), and he hasn’t introduced her to his friends because he thinks they won’t approve. When he finally tells them, he becomes convinced that Kate is embarrassed for him to meet her friends. It ends up being untrue, because apparently Kate has a “thing” for cavemen.
One assumes they are trying to make some correlation to interracial relationships, but it wasn’t funny, it was just icky. I’d stay far, far, far away from this one.
