Disco Down to American Idol
It’s Disco Night on American Idol. This is always a fun show, not because of the good, but because of the inevitable bad. Fortunately, this week, they are jumping right into it. Maybe they can end on time. But, on the minus side, they will probably have time for all four judges to talk after each performance. *sigh*
The night starts out with Lil Rounds singing I’m Every Woman by Chaka Kahn. Right, way to not sing those big diva songs, Lil. Maybe it’s just me, but her voice is basically just sounding screechy and annoying at this point. It’s sad, really, cause she started out with such promise. Now I’m just waiting for her to finish so we can get on with the rest of the show. Her hair is better this week, anyway. It’s clear that the judges are throwing her under the bus and that they don’t want to, since they had such high hopes for her. I’d say it’s bye-bye Lil.
Kris Allen - who is somehow playing a guitar on disco night - is singing, She Works Hard For The Woman, Donna Summer. I can’t fault his vocals and he clearly remade the song into something that was his and not just karaoke on the original (thankfully) but I’m not sure I liked it. No, I think I did like it, and yet, it was also missing something. I do think that Kris is safe this week. Laura just said what I think I was thinking but didn’t say, that it sounds just like everything else he sings every week (even if he is in the death second spot).
Danny Gokey is singing September, Earth, Wind and Fire. We were messing around with what songs the Idols might sing this week and I think I may have actually chosen this one for Danny. I really liked it. I think I might even download that one off of iTunes. Laura also loves Danny, in case you’re wondering, and she wants to see him do something truly gospel, like with a big choir. She may be on to something. He is so super safe, I can’t stress that enough.
Allison Iraheta is scaring me a little with her outfit as she sings Hot Stuff, Donna Summer. I wish she had speeded it up a little, rather than slowing it down, but other than that, I thought was wasn’t bad. Again, she can carry a tune and she is always so sure of what she’s doing and where she’s going. Laura’s comments: She looks like a mess, the arrangement was a mess, but her vocals were right on.
Adam Lambert is putting his own spin on the song alright. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Bee Gee’s If I Can’t Have You quite like this before. The words were the same, but that was about all. Unbelievable! Laura’s comment: “Adam is what they thought David Cook was last year. He really does something original, instead of just pretending to be original.”
Matt Giraud is Stayin’ Alive, the Bee Gees, or at least he hopes so. But I doubt it. It’s a fun upbeat song, but he’s kinda karaoke, I think. Maybe it was better live, but it was in no way his best, in my opinion. I think he’s done.
Anoop Desai is going to Dim All the Lights, Donna Summer. Laura says he better be amazing or he’s going home. I could almost agree with her, except that I think those two spots are already taken by Lil and Matt. He did make everyone in the front ask “what is a victrola?” He started out good, but ended really badly. Even though he is in the pimp spot, I take it back, Anoop may be fighting Matt for that ticket home. Its clear, though, that the judges want Anoop to stay and Matt to go, since Anoop was pretty bad, and except for Simon, they all gave him good feedback.
I’d say the bottom three should be Lil, Matt and Anoop, but a quick early check at dialidol has Lil in third place (Vote for the Worst’s influence?), Anoop in fourth place (due to his pimp spot placement?) and Allison dead last (she wasn’t the best tonight, but she was leagues better than Lil, Matt and Anoop).

Well we were a little off this week but overall I’d say we made some similar observations. I did forget about that bum note at the end of Anoop’s song though. Ouch…not the best way to end the show. I’m predicting Lil and Anoop will be going because…well that’s what TPTB want and the votes mean nothing.

Oh, I didn’t forget about that note. I was right there writing the review while it happened. But I just didn’t want to kick the man when he was already down.
I thought his performance was bad enough, even without that bad last note.

You need to listen to just the vocal on Rickey’s site when you’re writing your review…believe me you’ll get a whole new perspective on all of them without the manipulation mind games going on in the show.
