Go Go Gokey Has Finally Go-Go-Gone
I’m gonna cut to the chase on my American Idol chop and slash show review.
We watched three home visit reels, sat through Jordin Sparks and Katy Perry (thank God for my mute button, since I didn’t start the show late enough to fast forward through all that), a silly Ford commercial where Kris Allen and Danny Gokey had super powers and Adam Lambert was just smart, and some charity thing with Alicia Keyes. Also, a very lame movie plug. And Katy Perry was wearing a cape with Adam Lambert’s name on it.
Observations I made while watching the show:
1. Theoretically everyone this week is in both the bottom three and the top three.
2. At their home town visits both Kris and Adam basically just sang, while Danny had a full orchestra and backup singers treatment.
3. Both Jordin Sparks and Katy Perry sounded screechy and off key to me.
4. Each one of these remaining three guys are good in their own way, so this is really anyone’s game right now.
5. Each one of the guys will have a record deal.
6. I felt compelled to sit through every moment of the home town reels. It seemed important since we’ve seen so much less of the contestants this year than normal, thanks to the addition of another useless judge who has to take up time spewing her irrelevant comments.
Earlier today I sat and re-listened to all the songs from last night. I closed my eyes and just listened to the music (which took less than 9 minutes, by the way, out of an entire hour of show) and I have to admit that the best pure vocal of the night was Danny’s You Are So Beautiful. Just lovely.
I know I’m not necessarily the most technical person when it comes to praise or criticism. That’s because when I’m watching Idol, I’m listening for what I like or for what sounds off to me, not for every single nuance of badness like some reviewers I’ve read. Also, I don’t always watch the screen, cause that tends to take away from the performance for me. I need to focus on the singing itself to see if I just plain old like what I’m hearing. I don’t really care about their dancing abilities or their clothes, at least not that much.
But back to tonight. I knew that no one was safe, and so I wasn’t really that surprised to hear that Danny was going home and that Kris and Adam are final two standing.
Personally, I think Adam will mop up the floor with Kris. Or at least I hope so.

Well they couldn’t have two more different contestants in the finale if they tried so it will be interesting. This should have been the same last year with a Castro/Cook showdown. If Kris just sticks to his mellow nice tone when singing and his bohemian change up to songs he’ll surprise everyone. If he tries to out-screech Adam with the big notes, he’ll probably still win but it will be a hollow victory because he’ll be hitting bad notes all over the place.
I enjoyed Gokey’s “You Are So Beautiful” much more last night than on the performance night. Something was different. I think he really was thinking of his wife and not about winning this stupid title. He sang it with heart and it showed.
That’s the difference between him and Adam. Adam is an entertainer and he makes no bones about the fact that he’s acting up there…and he’s good at it. Gokey tried to sell a story but he never really seemed like he was feeling it. So neither did I.
