Hulu Awards: Best Science Fiction Movie
Another Hulu Award poll.
There’s a little story I have to tell about the Hulu Awards. This week, because I’m so anxious that Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog wins the award for Best Web Original, I posted about it at Whedonesque. Well, apparently, this drew quite a few people over to The Hulu Review blog, all of them with very strong opinions. It lead to Matt, the Hulu Man, posting a blog explaining a lot of things. Now these were things I thought were obvious, but then one of my own friends asked a question that made me realize this wasn’t so.
Take the present category for instance, Best Science Fiction Movie. The nominees in this category are The Fifth Element, Men In Black, Planet of the Apes, Starship Troopers and The Thing. Are these the best science fiction movies out there? Not really, but they are the movies that are on Hulu. So as we’ve whittled these categories down to the final few, we’ve had to make choices based on what was the best of what was available. But back to my story, the point was that people have been asking why certain shows and/or movies weren’t on the list.
So, um, that’s why. Even if some show or movie was the best ever, ever, of all time, if it’s not on Hulu, we don’t get to vote for it. Personally, I thought that was implicit in the title, Hulu Awards. But apprently not.
Anyway, go vote for Best Science Fiction Movie. And you still have time to vote for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
Here’s the poll:

Is Planet of the Apes the original or the remake? That makes BIG difference in my voting. If it’s the original with Charlton Heston, then obviously it’s the first pick. If not, then I’d have to go with Men in Black.

That’s a great question, Steve! The easy answer is, it’s the remake. And so I agree with you 100%. Apparently, I got completely sidetracked (as I so often do) and forgot to talk about the movies at all.
The long answer in cases like this where there is a re-make, is that you can always go check at Hulu to see which movie is listed on the site. In this particular example, however, the movie in question is no longer up on the site, since Hulu does change things up from time to time. So, again, it was the remake.

If Planet of the Apes on this list is the remake, then that means all five of these nominees for Best Science Fiction movie are crap. DOn’t be so cheap - go out and spend a couple of bucks and rent DVD’s of movies actually worth seeing.

Although I appreciate everyone’s opinion, Oplease19, I think you’re missing the point. This is all about the Hulu Awards. I’m a panelist and these are the final movies in this category. It’s not about renting DVDs, although that certainly is a way to watch whatever movie you want to watch. Some people, many, many, many people, however, access the content on Hulu every day.

First of all, this is a horrible list of SF movies. I vote for Men In Black, because it’s obviously a comedy - not to be taken seriously.
Starship Troopers would have been far and away the best, had they kept close to the original novel (required reading at the Naval Academy, I’m told, by a recent grad - Heinlein was a midshipman), a serious treatment of a military career, only incidentally set in the future. Unfortunately, Hollywood simply saw it as another chance to blow up spaceships and things …

Not enough movies to really make an educated decision. Jurassic Park, Outland, Alien and quite a few other really good or great movies were not included and any list that does not have Star Wars Episodes 4, 5 & 6 on it is a joke anyway.

I’m really glad that this is stirring up so many comments. Thanks everyone who’s giving their opinions. I love it!
As I was trying to make clear in my post - and I guess I failed - I also agree that this is a bad group of movies to choose from. I did go to Hulu and checked out the entire list of SciFi movies, and there wasn’t much good on the list to start with. So this final list is the best of the not so very good.
Maybe we should have our own write in choices for best SciFi movie!
I’ll have to think about which one I think is best, but I do love Independence Day.

Just a s an FYI, I counted and there are only 20 movies on Hulu listed as Sci Fi.
Atom Age Vampire
The Crawling Hand
Dragonfly
The Fifth Element
Frankenstein’s Daughter
Gattaca
The Giant Gila Monster
Horror Express
The Last Man on Earth
Men in Black
Night of the Living Dead
The People that Time Forgot
The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues
Somewhere In Time
Speedracer: The Movie
Starship Troopers
Terror Is a Man
The Thing
Thunderbirds
Thunderbolt And Lightfoot
So that was the list we started out with. You can see why the final list is what it is.
