Judges’ Choice on American Idol
My American Idol review will be a little different tonight. I usually write my review as I’m actually watching the show, but this week my laptop has some issues and I’m not able to do that.
So I took notes and now I’m attempting to decipher what I wrote.
I have to say I can’t remember a stronger Top 3, or maybe I’m not trying hard enough. I thought everyone did pretty well, considering, and I’m not happy that they only got to sing two songs apiece instead of three. But I’ve been unhappy with so many things this season, what’s one more.
Danny Gokey opened the show and Adam Lambert was once again in the pimp spot. SInce I don’t have my computer, I don’t have my Excel spreadsheet, but I think that might be three times since the Top 13.
Danny’s first song, chosen for him by Paula, was Terence Trent D’Arby’s Dance Little Sister. None of us in the room knew the song, so in that respect I, at least, found it difficult to connect to it. But Danny sounded good, the song was a great choice for his voice and range, and he did a nice solid job. But I could have lived without all the do-do-do’s in the middle.
For his own song choice, Danny sang You Are So Beautiful, Joe Cocker. Overall he sounded good on this one, too, especially on the higher notes. There was one spot where he dipped dangerously low into offkey land, but it was so brief as to be almost unnoticable. I do wish he had sang more of the song, though.
Kris Allen’s first song was chosen by Kara and Randy. It was Apologize by OneRepublic and it certainly shows Kris off as the most mainstream artist of the three. But it was still pretty boring for me, Kris is just too much of the same. Plus, he basically sang the song as it was written, so I didn’t get a sense that he was connected to it in any way.
Kris’ second song, Heartless by Kayne West, was much better. But I still wasn’t really impressed with him. Laura’s comment was that she’ll be happy when she never has to hear Kris’s voice again. I wouldn’t go that far, but I’m getting close. My husband fell asleep during the performance.
Simon chose Adam’s first song, One by U2, and nearly drove poor Laura over the edge, since she didn’t want Adam to defile U2. Jeff and Laura didn’t like Adam’s take on the song, and even I have to admit that he queened it out a little in the middle, but even so, it was a good solid performance, every note was on key and Adam is clearly a pro. I’m not saying this was my favorite Adam performance, but I will still be downloading it on iTunes. If I ever get my laptop back.
Adam’s second song was Crying, Aerosmith. Laura and I both jumped up a little, excited, since we both love this song and since it reminds both of us of Constantine Maroulis’ audition. Look, there’s not much more that can be said about Adam at this point. When you have the flamy backgrounds you know you’re the winner. Even Laura admitted that no matter who is crowned the Idol next week, Adam Lambert has already won this contest.
My friend Sandy and I were even discussing this earlier today. Of the three final contestants, Kris would probably make the best winner, not because he’s the best, but because he is the most “pop” sounding. Danny clearly needs to make a gospel album, which he won’t be able to do if he wins, and Adam needs to make an album singing whatever the heck he wants, also not an option for the winner.
So at this point, it doesn’t really matter anymore who stands under the cascading confetti at the Kodak next Wednesday.
I’d like to think it will be Adam. But then only if they let him make the album he wants. If not, it can be one of the other two.

Well Gokey is at the bottom of the voting in all three categories on dialidol. We should get that Kradam finale…but we probably won’t. If Gokey doesn’t go tonight (he should have gone last week) the show is fixed. Period.
And if Gokey does go tonight and Kris ends up in the finale and ends up as the winner after picking up all of Gokey’s voting fans…you my dear, are a frightening psychic…or is that psycho? Either way I will bow to your amazing powers.
Funny that Adam and Constantine have very similar tastes in rock music.
Also funny that we had complete opposite views on the two Adam songs…I liked the first one better.
