Maybe Do Not Disturb Should Hang It Up
No, it wasn’t that funny. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me that if you’re gonna call yourself a sitcom, you should be at least a little bit funny. To me, it all seemed really forced. I wanted Do Not Disturb to be good, mostly cause there just aren’t that many sitcoms on TV these days, and this is one of the only new sitcoms that even looked interesting. Plus, Jason Bateman is the director for this show and I love Jason Bateman.
But it just didn’t work for me. The entire premise of the pilot episode was all about sexual harrassment in the work place. I mean, that was it. A former employee wrote an anonymous article about having an affair with their superior when they worked at the hotel. There is a big meeting about it, and everyone assumes that the offender is Neal, the general manager (Jerry O’Connell).
Basically, however, the entire episode is just all about people sneaking around to have sex at work. Does that really even happen? Well, there were a couple of side stories, one about the gay man who is afraid that his long-term relationship has caused him to no longer be attractive to others, and the front desk clerk who wants to be a model.
Jerry O’Connell is a cutie, and Niecy Nash is funny, but the rest of the cast were pretty unremarkable. There was one exception, a young guy - the bellhop maybe? - whose name I didn’t catch during the ep, but who I looked up later. He was Dave Franco and the character was named Gus. He had some of the best lines on the show, and his delivery was really good. It will be worth watching this show for a little longer, just to see him.
There was a bit of an unexpected twist at the end, which I won’t give away. That made for a bit of fun, but overall, I was not impressed. I’ll watch again, but they better wow me next week.
