Moonlight Feels Right

I gave in. I’ve always been attracted to vampire lore, as far back as I remember. I’m not sure when it even started, but I remember reading Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot back in the mid-70’s, when I was just a tyke. OK, I was probably in 6th or 7th grade, but that’s still young, when you think about it. I’m not saying that I love all vampire stuff, exactly, cause I never could get into Anne Rice. And I wanted to. It just takes itself too seriously for me. I like my fantasy/scifi to be less pompous.
As I’ve mentioned before, my all time fav show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and being a huge Whedonite (that is, loving everything that Joss Whedon has ever touched), I was feeling very resistant to the idea of a new vampire detective. I mean, it’s not like the idea hasn’t been done before. *sigh* Angel was just cancelled too soon. *sigh* (Plus, it feels like this year is full of Whedon show rip offs, Moonlight for Angel, Bionic Woman for Buffy.) So I was not planning on watching the new CBS series Moonlight airing on Friday’s at 9 pm. All the way up until some time on Friday when I gave in and threw a tape in the VCR. (Sorry, I’m old fashioned and I don’t Tivo yet. Maybe next year.) As I was saying, I taped it, but I still didn’t watch it. I told myself it was just in case I wanted to see it. Just in case. Well, turns out, I couldn’t stop thinking about that tape sitting there, just waiting for me, so come Saturday afternoon, I gave in and watched it.
I have to admit, it was good. (Which probably means it won’t last, and that makes me worried about getting attached. I’ve been hurt so many times before.) The story was interesting, the characters engaging and well-defined, and the plot moved quickly along and carried me with it. Which is surprising, since I had no intention of liking the show at all.
It helps that the cast includes Jason Dohring (from Veronica Mars) - I loved the VM shout out to Hearst College - and the first ep featured Rudolf Martin, who played Dracula in an ep of BtVS.
I will definitely be watching again. Hopefully, it will last.
