The Devil Made Me Do It

Finally, I got a chance to watch Reaper. For all I went through, it should have been better than it was. But clearly, it wasn’t the show’s fault that I had issues. Overall, I liked it, but I wasn’t blown away. Ray Wise is very charming as the devil, and just a little scary when he needs to be. The show isn’t exactly what I’d call a comedy, though. They seem to be trying just a bit too hard to be funny. The character of “Sock” (Tyler Labine), in my opinion, is more annoying than anything else. Plus, he’s the one that hit the doggy with the car door and that’s not something that makes me happy. Also, I don’t think there’s any real chemistry between him and Valarie Rae Miller, who plays his former love interest, Josie. The lead, Bret Harrison, as Sam Oliver, is cute enough and Missy Peregrym as Andi, his crush, is good.
One thing I’m not sure about is suspension of disbelief, if you know what I mean. The way they either just accept or don’t accept that his soul was sold to the devil by his parents doesn’t ring quite true to me. Its like you have to have everyone just go, “Oh, that’s bad, dude” or be like, “What? Are you crazy?” But they seem to have a little of both and not enough of either. I’m not being clear, am I?
If you ever saw Buffy The Vampire Slayer, my all time fav show, ever, you would see how they handled that. Almost everyone she encountered knew who and what she was and they didn’t have to explain. Although, now that I come to think about it, in the very first episodes, Xander thought she was a little crazy. But overall, people just accepted it and so, we accepted it. I think if there is too much discussion about something, it makes people question other things even more. So, in this case, if there is a question about someone’s ability to sell a soul (just any old soul, apparently) to the devil, then there will be more questions, like how can the DMV office be a portal to hell. No wait, that’s one of those things we will just accept. Cause we know it’s true! But what I’m talking about is how can his parents just give away his soul and, if they can, what happens to free will. Plus, it raises all these questions about religious beliefs.
OK, fine, now I’m just thinking too much.
I’ll definitely keep watching Reaper, cause I want to give it a chance, but I don’t envy the show it’s spot, opposite House.
